Sáile Ocean Festival 2026
Sáile (the Irish word for saltwater or sea-water) is a multi-disciplinary festival designed to deepen the connection between the people of Galway and the Atlantic Ocean. By blending film, expert-led discussion, hands-on workshops, and the arts, Sáile aims to transform passive ocean awareness into active community stewardship. Set in the heart of the Claddagh and the University of Galway, the festival celebrates our marine identity and heritage while addressing the urgent climate challenges facing our coastlines. The festival will span from September 11th - 13th, and transform our city into a vibrant hub of Ocean Literacy, bringing together scientists, artists, and the general public in a communal celebration of the ocean.
The Sáile Festival is designed as a truly inclusive, intergenerational event that reflects the diverse makeup of Galway’s coastal community. Our audience spans from local families and young children engaging with hands-on STEM workshops to university students and professionals attending high-level expert panels. By blending accessible community activities with technical scientific discourse and maritime arts, we cater to everyone from the "ocean-curious" resident to the dedicated environmental advocate, ensuring that the message of Atlantic stewardship resonates across all ages and backgrounds.
The primary objective of Sáile is to significantly advance national Ocean Literacy by translating the essential principles of ocean science into accessible, community-led action. Through our "Hot Topic" panels, we aim to demystify complex environmental data, providing a platform where experts in blue carbon, pollution, conservation, and coastal resilience can engage directly with the public. By moving the conversation from abstract global challenges to tangible local solutions, the festival empowers citizens to make informed decisions and advocate for the protection of our marine ecosystems.
Beyond scientific education, the festival is committed to fostering a profound socio-environmental connection through the power of creative arts. By integrating documentary screenings, maritime art exhibits, and live performances, Sáile engages diverse demographics and makes ocean health a shared cultural priority. Ultimately, the festival aims to establish a scalable, sustainable model for coastal engagement. By embedding practical environmental workshops and ambassador training into its core, Sáile ensures that the momentum generated in Galway translates into long-term stewardship and a resilient future for Ireland’s Atlantic coast.
